Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when the couple move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
