Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
