Administration Reveals Federal Employee Layoffs as Funding Gap Approaches Three-Week Mark

Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker said. “Starting next week, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official ordered the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

An analysis argued that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the very day that government employees received only a incomplete payment for the end of September but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
